Visa Extension in Thailand (TM7): Types, Documents, and Process

Corporate Mar 27, 2026

Overview of Visa Extensions in Thailand

Visa extensions in Thailand are handled by the Immigration Bureau and are applied for using the TM7 form. An extension of stay allows you to remain in Thailand beyond the period originally granted upon entry. Extensions are not automatic — they require a formal application, supporting documents, and approval by an immigration officer.

It is crucial to understand the difference between a visa and an extension of stay. A visa is issued by a Thai embassy or consulate abroad and allows you to enter Thailand. An extension of stay is granted by the Immigration Bureau inside Thailand and allows you to remain beyond your initial permitted stay. The TM7 form is used specifically for extensions of stay.

Extension Based on Retirement (Section 2.12)

One of the most popular long-stay options for foreigners aged 50 and above.

    • 800,000 THB deposited in a Thai bank account for at least 2 months before application (and maintained for at least 3 months after)
    • Monthly income of at least 65,000 THB (with proof from your embassy or pension authority)
    • Combination of deposit and annual income totaling at least 800,000 THB

For foreigners working legally in Thailand with a valid work permit.

Short-Term Extensions

Tourist Visa Extension

Holders of a tourist visa (TR) or visa exemption entry can apply for a 30-day extension at any immigration office. Requirements are minimal:

  • TM7 form with photo
  • Passport
  • 1,900 THB fee
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or lease)

This is a straightforward process that usually takes 1-2 hours at the immigration office.

Emergency/Humanitarian Extensions

In exceptional circumstances (medical emergency, natural disaster, flight cancellations), immigration may grant short extensions on a case-by-case basis. Bring supporting documentation such as medical certificates or airline communications.

The Application Process

  1. Prepare documents: Gather all required documents and make copies. Sign every copy. Some offices require you to sign across each copied page.
  2. Visit immigration: Go to your local immigration office (based on your province of residence). In Bangkok, the main office is at Government Center B, Chaeng Watthana. Apply at least 30 days before your current stay expires.
  3. Submit application: Present your documents at the appropriate counter. An officer will review them and may ask questions.
  4. Pay the fee: 1,900 THB, payable in cash at most offices.
  5. Wait for processing: Simple extensions (tourist, retirement) are often processed same-day. Complex cases (work, first-time marriage) may take 1-3 weeks, during which you receive a "receipt stamp" in your passport allowing you to stay while the application is processed.
  6. Collect your passport: Return on the specified date to collect your passport with the new extension stamp.

Tips for a Successful Application

  • Apply early. Start preparing documents 2-3 weeks before your current stay expires. Do not wait until the last day.
  • Dress appropriately. Thai immigration offices have dress codes. Wear long pants, closed-toe shoes, and a collared shirt. Shorts, tank tops, and flip-flops may result in being turned away.
  • Bring extra photos. The standard size is 4x6 cm. Bring at least 3-4 photos in case extras are needed.
  • Keep your TM30 current. An outdated TM30 is one of the most common reasons for delays.
  • Be honest and consistent. Immigration officers may ask about your situation. Provide truthful, consistent answers.
  • Use an agent for complex cases. Visa agents can navigate bureaucratic requirements and language barriers. Reputable agents charge 5,000-15,000 THB depending on the extension type.
  • Check specific office requirements. Different immigration offices may have slightly different documentation requirements. Check online forums or call ahead.

Common Reasons for Denial

  • Insufficient financial documentation
  • Outdated or missing TM30
  • Incomplete application form or missing documents
  • Previous overstays or immigration violations
  • Applying too late (after current stay has expired)
  • Suspicion of a non-genuine marriage or employment arrangement

If denied, you will typically be given a 7-day order to leave Thailand. You can appeal or reapply from outside the country.
